Swaranya Sarkar is an Oberlin College Class of 2028 student majoring in Neuroscience, with a second major in Mathematics and a minor in Philosophy. Their interests center on systems neuroscience, especially how interacting circuits, neural rhythms, and electrical signaling produce complex brain function and behavior.

Previous research experience: I have explored both basic and clinical systems neuroscience. In one project, I investigated dopamine-astrocyte interactions in freely moving mice using fiber photometry to characterize signaling dynamics. I have also been involved in ongoing data analysis for a human clinical trial studying circadian rhythms in deep brain structures.

How I got started: My first entry point into neuroscience was Oberlin's STRONG program, where I gained hands-on lab experience during Winter Term and stayed with the lab afterward. Outside of college, I have largely found opportunities through cold emails.
