Fatima Alsaffar is an Oberlin College Class of 2029 student studying Biochemistry and Latin. Her research interests focus on clinical and chemistry research that can directly improve quality of life or medical care.

Previous research experience: I work and volunteer in a professor's lab studying catechol-coated PVDF discs to explore the metal-binding tendencies of melanin-inspired structures. I have learned to analyze data using UV-Vis spectroscopy, NMR, and colorimetry. I am also currently pursuing an opportunity in a dry lab to study the effects of smoking on knee radiofrequency ablation.

How I got started: A scholarship program at Oberlin connected students with research professors during my first fall on campus, and my first-year seminar encouraged us to write about the research topics we were pursuing. For the dry-lab opportunity I am currently exploring, I filled out a Biology Department interest form that I found on campus.
