Sophia Luzietti is a Colgate University Class of 2028 student majoring in Peace and Conflict Studies and Geography. I am passionate about immigration and refugee law as well as criminal justice reform and the intersection of the carceral state with housing policy.

Previous research experience: I have had two research experiences. The first was with the National Abolition Hall of Fame and Museum (NAHOF)> NAHOF serves a two-pronged mission. The first, is of course to honor the legacy of historical abolitionists. The second is to advance the second abolition: the moral conviction to end racism and the systemic injustices that stem from the legacies of slavery. This summer, my work focused on this second prong, which I achieved through a variety of projects.

First, I created a comprehensive guide to anti-racist resources, organizations, and museums both locally and regionally through interviews, site visits, and secondary research. In addition to documenting these resources, I was tasked with forging partnerships between NAHOF and these organizations to help NAHOF expand their local network. This research culminated in several deliverables for the museum. I created an anti-racist resource center in the entryway, a brochure that has been disseminated to hundreds of prospective visitors and museum guests, and a Geographic Information Systems map that displays our regional abolition allies.

My second assignment was to create an interactive curriculum that educated middle school students on how the legacies of slavery impact modern social justice issues. This programming will help NAHOF increase its revenue and youth outreach. Furthermore, it will contribute to broader public education campaigns in rural, upstate New York.

My last project was to create an outline for collaboration between NAHOF and Colgate’s CORE Conversations department. This will hopefully facilitate a long-term educational partnership between the university and the museum. Furthermore, it will help connect Colgate students to the immense local history that surrounds them, thereby facilitating community engagement.

Furthermore, I worked as a research assistant for the Connecticut Institute for Refugees and Immigrants (CIRI). Here, I created weekly briefs on clients home country conditions to assist case managers for victims of human trafficking and unaccompanied minors. I also analyzed how foreign and domestic policy would impact clients and their migration statuses.
