Peter Ryan is a Colby College Class of 2027 student majoring in Government and minoring in Environmental Studies and Art History. Their interests include federalism and the policy disparities that emerge across states, with particular focus on criminal justice, clemency, and environmental governance.

Previous research experience: I have conducted research through the Colby College Government Department over the past two years, much of it at the intersection of criminal justice and public policy. I have also worked alongside the Maine Indigent Defense Center, a Portland-based law firm, to think through how to amplify the impact of my research findings.

How I got started: I first became involved in research through a criminal justice course. My final paper sparked a deeper interest in the topic, and I connected with a law firm that had an idea for a research project. From there, I developed my own project and explored ways to make the research useful to broader communities.
