Zoe Roettger is a Carleton College Class of 2027 Classics major and Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellow with a minor in Medieval and Renaissance Studies. Her research interests focus on classical philology, Latin prose and poetry, manuscript transmission, and the ways texts change as they move through different historical and material contexts.

Previous research experience: I have worked as a research assistant for Facsimile Finder, in archives and special collections, and through the Mellon Mays program. A realistic project for me would involve close reading in Latin, comparing manuscript or facsimile variants, building an annotated bibliography, and using archival evidence to trace how a text was copied, circulated, or interpreted. My newspaper editing work has also made me attentive to the craft of explaining specialized material clearly.

How I got started: I got started when a course paper raised a question that I could not answer from secondary scholarship alone. A professor helped me turn that curiosity into a more sustained project, and Mellon Mays gave me the structure and funding to treat it as real research.
