Zoe McDaniel is a Carleton College Class of 2027 student majoring in Political Science and International Relations. Her research interests focus on political trust, participation, and local governance, especially how people interpret institutions and public authority during periods of social or economic change.

Previous research experience: I have worked as a research assistant at Carleton and at the University of California, Berkeley. A realistic version of my research work would include literature review, coding qualitative sources, cleaning survey or administrative data, and helping turn a broad political question into variables that can actually be studied. Writing for The Carletonian has also made me interested in how research findings are communicated outside academic journals.

How I got started: I got started through writing and political science coursework. I found a professor whose questions overlapped with the issues I kept returning to in papers and conversations, and I asked whether there was a way to support an existing project before trying to design one of my own.
