Max Fischer is a Carleton College Class of 2027 student studying Political Science and International Relations, Mandarin, and advanced statistics. His research interests focus on U.S.-Asia relations, Taiwan and cross-Strait politics, and the quantitative study of public opinion and political communication.

Previous research experience: I work as a research assistant in Carleton's Political Science department and have also spent time studying in Taiwan and working with the US-Asia Institute. A realistic research project for me would involve coding speeches or policy documents, building a dataset of political statements over time, and pairing that qualitative context with statistical analysis of public opinion or elite behavior.

How I got started: I got started by deliberately combining three things I was already doing: political science coursework, language study, and quantitative methods. Once I had a clearer regional focus, office-hours conversations with faculty made it much easier to identify an existing project where those skills were useful.
