Jincheng Zhao is a Carleton College Class of 2028 Psychology student with minors in Neuroscience and Biochemistry. Her interests combine mental health, cross-cultural identity, and computational genetics, with a particular interest in how biological and social factors can be studied together rather than in isolation.

Previous research experience: I work as an undergraduate research assistant at Carleton and have also been a computational genetics research intern at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. A realistic project for me would involve cleaning phenotype and genotype datasets, running quality-control checks, visualizing associations, and reading the psychology literature closely enough to understand what a statistical result actually means for human behavior.

How I got started: I got started by building quantitative skills through psychology and neuroscience coursework and then looking for a lab where those skills would be useful. I found that being able to say 'I can help clean data, code, or run analyses' made it easier to approach researchers even before I had my own research question.
