Emilia Sato is a Carleton College Class of 2029 student exploring Biology and Sociology and Anthropology. Her research interests connect biomedical science with questions about community and social context, especially how biological processes and lived environments together shape health outcomes.

Previous research experience: I previously completed a research internship at the Medical College of Wisconsin and have recently started as an undergraduate research assistant at Carleton. A realistic early-college research path for me would involve learning careful wet-lab technique, keeping a detailed notebook, helping process samples or collect data, and then gradually taking on more responsibility as I understand the project. I am also interested in eventually adding interviews or community-based methods to questions that cannot be answered in the lab alone.

How I got started: I got started before college through a structured research internship, which made it easier to know what to look for once I arrived at Carleton. I searched department pages, paid attention to faculty research descriptions, and reached out early instead of assuming first- and second-year students were too inexperienced to help.
