Annabella Strathman is a Carleton College Class of 2022 alum who studied Chemistry and is now a medical student at Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine. Her research interests bridge chemistry and medicine, with a focus on how molecular-level mechanisms can be translated into better diagnostics, treatments, and clinical questions.

Previous research experience: I spent multiple years in undergraduate research at Carleton and also completed a research internship at Northwestern University. A realistic description of that work would include learning how to design controlled experiments, keep detailed lab records, interpret spectroscopy or assay data, and troubleshoot protocols when results did not match expectations. Medical training now gives me a different perspective on which basic-science questions could matter most for patients.

How I got started: I got started by asking a chemistry professor how students move from course labs into real research. I joined a project early, stayed involved long enough to take on more independent responsibility, and used that experience to apply for a summer research internship.
