Tuna Durna is a Bates College Class of 2028 student studying Econometrics and Quantitative Economics and Political Science with a minor in Mathematics. His research interests include political economy, comparative politics, and public policy, particularly how political institutions, economic conditions, and public opinion shape policy outcomes. He is especially interested in populism, immigration, democratic institutions, and political behavior using quantitative and comparative approaches.

Previous research experience: I have worked as a research assistant at Bates College, conducting source research on EU animal welfare and trade policy for Professor Francesco Duina that was later published in JCMS. I have also assisted with comparative political science research on responses to terrorism in Europe, Turkey, and the U.S., and completed an independent research paper on populism and the construction of the “pure majority” in Turkey through the Pioneer Academics Research Program.

How I got started: I began by emailing and speaking one-on-one with professors researching areas that interested me. Building strong relationships with faculty through courses at Bates was especially helpful in finding research opportunities.
