Sebenele Lukhele is a Bates College Class of 2026 graduate who studied Biochemistry with a concentration in Applying Mathematical Methods. Their interests focus on making biomedical research more accessible to the public and translating scientific findings into policies and practices that improve healthcare for underserved communities.

Previous research experience: I have conducted research in multiple biomedical labs, including work on cellular signaling relevant to neurodegenerative disease at Bates, stem cell pluripotency using C. elegans at Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory, protein purification related to Borrelia morphology and Lyme disease at Bates, and autoimmunity in mouse models at UMass Chan Medical School, where I currently work as a Research Associate.

How I got started: My first research experience grew out of a research-focused course with Dr. Kruse at Bates. I became interested in the subject, asked how I could become more involved, and later applied through Handshake for a summer research assistant position in the lab. That experience introduced me to the research process and led to several subsequent research roles.
