Maria Torres Rey is a Bates College Class of 2028 student studying Political Science and Environmental Studies with a minor in Public Health. Her research interests focus on vaccine policy and infectious-disease management in tropical countries, particularly how public policy can respond to diseases such as dengue, Zika, and chikungunya.

Previous research experience: I worked on a summer research project in science diplomacy comparing Latin America and Southeast Asia in their management of infectious diseases including dengue, Zika, and chikungunya. I also researched the dynamics of vaccine technology transfer in Latin America, especially in the period following COVID-19.

How I got started: I began by reaching out to professors at Bates and at other institutions whose research inspired me and aligned with my academic interests.
