Stephanie Vergara is a Barnard College Class of 2028 student majoring in Neuroscience and Behavior and minoring in Race and Ethnicity. Their research interests center on epigenetic regulation in neurological disorders, particularly how exposure to environmental racism in utero may affect epigenetic mechanisms and shape neurodevelopmental outcomes.

Previous research experience: This summer, I conducted research with the Stanford School of Medicine Department of Pediatrics, collecting data to evaluate the Sweet Truth Act and studying how policy gaps and food deserts can restrict access to nutritious options and contribute to long-term health disparities. I am also beginning a position at Mount Sinai as a data analyst in clinical research.

How I got started: I found research opportunities through consistent applications on Handshake and tailored my materials for each lab. I customized my resume to emphasize relevant coursework and skills, wrote targeted cover letters showing genuine interest in each principal investigator's research, and made use of personal and professional connections.
